Choosing The Right Cabinet Cooler

Choosing The Right Cabinet Cooler

Exairs compressed air operated, Cabinet Cooler Systems are a low cost, reliable way to cool and purge electronic control panels. There are no moving parts to wear out and no filters to replace, eliminating the need for constant monitoring.

Cabinet Cooler systems eliminate heat related problems by providing a temperature controlled environment inside of electrical enclosures. Typically set to maintain 95F (but also adjustable) a Cabinet Cooler system can withstand harsh, remote environments with little maintenance. They cool heat loads up to 5600 Btu/Hr and are UL/CE listed to maintain your cabinet’s NEMA (IP) integrity.

How do they work?

Compressed air enters the vortex tube powered Cabinet Cooler and is converted into two streams, one hot and one cold. Hot air from the vortex tube is muffled and exhausted through the vortex tube exhaust. The cold air is discharged into the cabinet through the included cold air distribution kit. The displaced hot air in the cabinet rises and exhausts to atmosphere through the cabinet cooler body. The control cabinet is both cooled and purged with cool, clean air. Outside air is never able to enter the control panel (as long as all existing Fans are sealed)

Choosing the right unit for you.

Firstly, you will need to calculate the head load in the unit this can be done using the Cabinet Cooler Sizing Calculator this will tell you the exact unit to use but there are some other considerations to take into account first....

NEMA (IP) Ratings.

All standard cabinet coolers come in three distint ratings dependant on the environment in which they are installed.

  • NEMA 12 (IP54) means it’s dust tight & oil tight, indoor duty. If no liquids or corrosives are present, this is probably what you’re looking for.
  • NEMA 4 (IP66) means it’s dust tight, oil tight, splash resistant, indoor/outdoor duty. These have a low pressure relief valve for the Vortex Tube’s hot flow, and the exhaust from the panel, to maintain the splash resistant integrity of the panel.
  • NEMA 4X (IP66) systems meet all requirements for a NEMA 4 rating, and are made of Type 303 Stainless Steel for corrosion resistance. We also make them in Type 316 Stainless Steel for higher levels of corrosion resistance, which is oftentimes specified in food and pharmaceutical environments.

What are your Running Requirements?

We supply three purchasing options for Cabinet Coolers as follows.

  • Cooler Only - Usually for OEM applications this is just the cabinet cooler without any of the operational accessories.
  • Continous Operation - This includes the cabinet cooler but also the distribution pipe to aid in circulating the air inside of the cabinet.
  • Thermostat Control - This includes all of the above but the inclusion of a compressed air filter, solenoid valve (available in 120VAC, 240VAC & 24VDC) and thermostat. These units are best for providing air saving costs as when the temperature reaches the desired temperature the air will be switched off until the temperature rises.

What if my application requires a little extra safety?

Dont worry we have you covered! Cabinet Coolers are provided in the following formats for customers with specialist requirements.

  • High Temperature Cabinet Coolers are ideal when ambient temperatures reach 52c to 93c. Internal components can withstand high temperatures like those near furnaces & ovens.
  • Non-Hazardous Purge Cabinet Coolers are ideal for dirty/dusty areas where contaminants might normally pass through small holes or conduits. Under normal conditions the NHP Cabinet Coolers provide a slight positive pressure in the enclosure by passing 1CFM (28LPM) of air through the cooler when the solenoid is closed creating a positive pressure in your cabinet at all times.
  • ATEX Cabinet Cooler Systems are ideal for use with classified enclosure purge and pressurised systems. The units are to be used in conjuction with a purged and pressurized controller and never should be relied upon to do this themselves. For use within the following areas Zones 2 & 22.
  • Hazardous Location Cabinet Cooler Systems are a UL & CE Classified cooler for use in purged electrical enclosures found withing classified areas which include -
    • Class I Div 1, Groups A, B, C & D.
    • Class II Div 1, Groups E, F & G.
    • Class III
